How to LEAD a better life

Become a better leader in your sphere of influence. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Every one of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock. The leader of people is a guardian and is responsible for his subjects. A man is the guardian of his family and he is responsible for them. A woman is the guardian of her husband’s home and his children and she is responsible for them. The servant of a man is a guardian of the property of his master and he......

Leaders you love vs leaders you hate

It has been narrated on the authority of ‘Auf bin Malik that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The best of your rulers are those whom you love and who love you, who invoke God’s blessings upon you and you invoke His blessings upon them. Dhul Qarnayn - the qualities of an ideal leader

In Surat al Kahf Allah mentioned four stories and one of them is the story of Dhul Qarnayn. Why does Allah Almighty tell us about Dhul Qarnayn? The story of Dhul Qarnayn appears in Surat al Kahf and is an answer to one of the three questions posed by Quraysh to the Prophet (peace be on him) to challenge whether he was truly the Messenger of God or not. They had sent a delegation from Makkah to Yathrib to ask the Jewish Rabbis to give them some questions which would throw him,......

Allah loves those who are easy going and make life easy for others

You get what you give Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) said: O Allah, cause distress to him who has any charge over my people and made things difficult for them, and be gentle to him who has any charge over my people......

Reckless leaders can be more damaging than the coronavirus

A Capitol Disaster Todays reflection is about reckless leaders. It is very topical due to the violence that took place when the Capitol in the US was stormed on Wednesday by right-wing insurgents.  In the Quran, Allah Almighty revealed to us how He informed Ibrahim (peace be on him) that He had chosen him and appointed him to be leader for humanity, and how Ibrahim responded by asking if his descendants too would be leaders: وَإِذِ ابْتَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ رَبُّهُ بِكَلِمَاتٍ فَأَتَمَّهُنَّ ۖ قَالَ إِنِّي جَاعِلُكَ لِلنَّاسِ إِمَامًا ۖ قَالَ وَمِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِي ۖ......

What does love have to do with leadership?

The best and the worst leaders In a beautiful hadith, narrated by ‘Auf b. Malik, who embraced Islam after the Treaty of Hudabiya, the Prophet (peace be on him) taught us who are the best leaders and the worst leaders. He said that the best leaders are the ones you love and who love you. As the Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) said: The best of your rulers are those whom you love and who love you, who invoke God’s blessings upon you and you invoke His blessings upon them.......

Leadership has limits. It is not a licence to trample on others.

The limits of leadership There are plenty of verses in the Quran about leadership and the importance of the leader in the community.  At the same time, we also have plenty of narrations in the sunnah which define the responsibilities and boundaries of leaders. Leadership is not a blank cheque to do what you want In the hadith, A’isha reported that the Prophet (peace be on him) said: O God, cause distress to him who has any charge over my people and causes them distress, and be gentle to him who has......

leadership is an amanah: don't mix it with personal gain

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be on him) said: The most beloved people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to people. (Tabarani) Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Indeed Allah will question every leader about his subjects: did he fulfil the amanah or waste it’. (Nasa’i) There are many hadith which talk about the responsibility of leaders and the qualities of leadership. If you read through the Quran and search for these......

How to Glue a Fractured Ummah Back Together

Gluing the Ummah Back Together Allah the Almighty mentions in Surah Al Imran one of the fundamental verses in the Qur’an concerning the unity of the ummah: And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favour of Allah upon you – when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favour, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to......

What Makes a Good Leader?

Leadership and Justice     When his Lord tested Ibrahim’s faith, (by His words) and he satisfied the test, He said, “I am appointing you as the leader of mankind.” Abraham asked, “Will this leadership also continue through my descendants?” The Lord replied, “The unjust do not have the right to exercise My authority.” (2:124) Allah the Almighty mentions in Surah Baqarah, when the Lord of Ibrahim tested him, and he fulfilled his test, then Allah the Almighty said, ‘I am going to appoint you as the leader of humanity’. Ibrahim (peace......
