What duas are there for sadness?

What duas are there for sadness?

There are times when we feel down. There were times when the prophets were scared and distressed and felt sorrow. Throughout the Quran there are ayahs of consolation and hope.

Acknowledge your situation

In Surat al Anbiya, we are taught through the example of Prophet Ayyub (peace be on him) to acknowledge our situation:

And [mention] Ayyub, when he called to his Lord, ‘Indeed, adversity has touched me, and you are the Most Merciful of the merciful.’ (21:83)

Waayyooba ith nada rabbahu annee massaniya alddurru waanta arhamu alrrahimeena

Remember that Allah is always with you

When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was in the Cave of Thawr with the Prophet (peace be on him), hiding from the assassins who were pursuing them, the Prophet (peace be on him) reassured him, saying inallaha ma’ana:

Allah Almighty is with us. (9:40)

Remember that Allah is the one who protects you

In Surat al Yusuf, Yaqoub (peace be on him) said:

But Allah is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful. (12:64)

Qala hal amanukum AAalayhi illa kama amintukum AAala akheehi min qablu faAllahu khayrun hafithan wahuwa arhamu alrrahimeena

Ask Allah to ease your burden

In Surat al Taha, when Musa (peace be on him) was given the task of telling Firaun that he needed to amend his ways, Musa called on Allah to ease the tightness in his chest, and equip him with what he needed to face this challenge. He prayed:

O my Lord! Open my heart, make my work easy for me, and remove the impediment from my speech so that they may understand my speech. (20:26-28)

Qala rabbi ishrah lee sadree Wayassir lee amree Waohlul AAuqdatan min lisanee Yafqahoo qawlee (20:26-28)

Ask Allah to cure you from all that troubles you

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that Jibril (Gabriel) came to the Prophet (peace be on him) and said:

‘O Muhammad! Do you feel sick?’

He (peace be on him) said: ‘Yes.’

Jibril supplicated thus (i.e., he performed ruqyah):

With the Name of Allah. I recite over you (to cleanse you) from all that troubles you, and from every harmful mischief and from the evil of the eyes of an envier. Allah will cure you; and with the Name of Allah, I recite over you. (Muslim)

Bismillahi arqika, min kulli shay’in yu’dhika, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘ayni hasidi, Allahu yashfika, bismillahi arqika.

Know that Allah can remove any difficulty

O Allah, there is no ease other than what You make easy. If You please You ease what is difficult. (Ibn Hibban)

Allaahumma laa sahla illaa ma ja’altahu sahlan wa ‘Anta taj’alul-hazna ‘idhaa shi’ta sahlan.

Praising Allah lightens your heart

In Surat al Hijr, Allah said:

We are aware that your heart is strained by what they say. So glorify the praise of your Lord, and be among those who bow down. (15:97-98)

Remember that not everything that is good for you is pleasant and easy

Perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not. (2:216)

Do not let your sadness overwhelm you

Normal sadness is part of our nature. Someone who is never sad is not normal. Deep sadness which paralyses you is not good. Shaytan can easily prey on you, when you are sad. Shaytan exploits, magnifies and intensifies feelings of sadness which can even lead to physical and mental illness.

Dua for relief

It was reported from ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ood that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

‘No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and says:

‘O Allah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your female slave, my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every Name belonging to You which You named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Quran the life of my heart and the light of my breast, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety’

but Allah will take away his sorrow and grief, and give him in their stead joy.’ (Ahmad)

‘Allaahumma innee ‘abduka wa ibn ‘abdika wa ibn amatika, naasiyati bi yadika, maadin fiyya hukmuka, ‘adlun fiyya qadaa’uka, as’aluka bi kulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka aw anzaltahu fi kitaabika aw ‘allamtahu ahadan min khalqika aw ista’tharta bihi fi ‘ilm il-ghaybi ‘andak an taj’ala al-Qur’aana rabee’ qalbi wa noor sadri wa jalaa’a huzni wa dhahaaba hammi’

More duas for relief

Ibn ‘Abbas reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to say, when he felt distressed or depression and worries:

‘There is no god except Allah, the Almighty, the Forbearing; there is no god except Allah, the Lord of the Mighty Throne; there is no god except Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth and Lord of the noble Throne.’ (Bukhari and Muslim)

The dua of Yunus (peace be on him)

Sa`d reporter that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said the supplication of Dhun-Nun (Prophet Yunus) when he supplicated, while in the belly of the whale was:

‘There is none worthy of worship

except You, Glory to You, Indeed, I have been of the transgressors.

Lā ilāha illā anta subḥānaka innī kuntu minaẓ-ẓālimīn

So indeed, no Muslim man supplicates with it for anything, ever, except Allah responds to him. (Tirmidhi)

Another dua for relief

Asma’ daughter of Umays narrated
that the Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) said to her:

May I not teach you phrases which you utter in distress? (These are:) “Allah, Allah is my Lord, I do not associate anything as partner with Him.” (Abu Dawud)

Do not be left unsupported for the blink of an eye

O Allah, I hope for Your mercy. Do not leave me to myself even for the blinking of an eye (i.e. a moment). Correct all of my affairs for me. There is none worthy of worship but You. (Abu Dawud and Ahmad)

Allaahumma rahmataka ‘arjoo falaa takilnee ‘ilaa nafsee tarfata ‘aynin, wa ‘aslih lee sha’nee kullahu, laa’ilaaha ‘illaa ‘Anta.

Ask Allah for clarity

Allahumma arinal haqqa haqqaw warzuqnat tiba’ah, wa arinal batila batilaw warzuqnaj tinabah

O Allah, enable me to see the truth as truth and give me the ability to follow it, and enable me to see the falsehood as false and give me the ability to refrain from it.

May Allah remove your concerns and take your sadness away. Ameen.
