How to deal with injustice

In Surat Ibrahim Allah Almighty says: وَلَا تَحۡسَبَنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَـٰفِلًا عَمَّا یَعۡمَلُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَۚ إِنَّمَا یُؤَخِّرُهُمۡ لِیَوۡمࣲ تَشۡخَصُ فِیهِ ٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرُ Never think that Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers are doing. He is but giving them respite up to a day when the eyes shall remain upraised (in terror). In this verse, Allah is confirming the fact that nothing in this universe is out of His control. He is fully aware of everything that is going on. During calamities many people are easily broken which reflects the inherent nature of humans,......

Peace does not come with violence and peace does not come without dignity

The distressing situation in Palestine is a cause of deep pain for Muslims all over the world. Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with them) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: مثل المؤمنين في توادهم وتراحمهم وتعاطفهم، مثل الجسد إذا اشتكى منه عضو تداعى له سائر الجسد بالسهر والحمى” ‏(‏‏(‏متفق عليه‏)‏‏)‏ ‏ “The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy are just like one body. When one of the limbs suffers, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever”. In this hadith the......

Reciting the Dua al Qunut in times of calamity

What is the dua al qunut? The dua al qunut is a supplication made standing. It is recited during Fajr prayer in the Shafi madhab, and during the witr prayer in the Hanafi method. In addition, it can be prayed if a calamity befalls the Ummah, particularly when atrocities are committed against Muslims or disasters. The Prophet (peace be upon him) made the dua qunut in every salah for one month, as stated by Ibn Abbas, to ask Allah to protect the innocent. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that......

Why connect with Allah at a young age?

Girls Age 11+ Why is it important to focus on our relationship/connection with Allah Almighty as we grow up? To *recognise* His blessings and give thanks: Allah is Our Creator and Sustainer The first reason why anyone should connect with Allah is because He is Our Creator! He is our Rabb (Caretaker, Nourisher, Sustainer). In fact, He created not just us but everything else in creation for us, so we can live and thrive. Just the sun alone is an enormous blessing. It gives us light and energy to work during the......

The synergy between Minimalism and Islam

“Simplifying Life: The Minimalist Path in Islam” A deceased wise relative once said, “Only buy what you need and then visit a shop, do not got go to the shops and create a need.” The synergy between Minimalism and Islam is a profound one, offering a path to simplicity and contentment in a world often characterised by excess and clutter. We live in a world which offers more, yet we have less clarity. Minimalism encourages individuals to shed the unnecessary physical and mental burdens from their lives, creating room for what truly......

Friendships and the company we keep (part 3)

A beautiful friendship: Abu Bakr Siddique (may Allah be pleased with him) and the Prophet (peace be upon him) The image that comes to mind when I think of a friendship based on love, loyalty and goodness, where love of Allah Almighty is the core and source that binds it, is the story of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), the saintly companion, and the Prophet (peace be upon him). Loyalty and Support to the Prophet (peace be upon him) Abu Bakr Siddique, (may Allah be pleased with him) is......

Friendships and the company we seek (part 2)

Let’s think about ourselves and the company we seek The qualities we seek in a grounded and strong friendship is just as important in these formative years as much as getting to know ourselves. They are our goto when it comes to finding comfort, seeking advice, or having fun. And yet again, in Islam we find the answers. Our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) has left priceless gem as sprinkles of lights along the path of guidance to help us navigate through the darkest of places. Let’s look at what he,......

Friendships and the company we keep

School and friendships Our friendships are an important part of growing up. Our friendships define who we are. They can wane and wither or stay loyal and strong. No matter what stage of school you’re at, your friends will always be your companions. Senior School As we grow taller and more mature, we spend more time in school, first junior and then senior school, making friends with classmates who slowly but surely become our new extended family. Through these formative years, we develop our own interests and preferences and start becoming more......

Knowing Allah through His Beautiful Names: Al Mu'izz and Al Mudhil

Pairs of names Two of the beautiful names of Allah Almighty are Al-Mu’izz and Al-Mudhill. Al-Mu’izz is the One who gives honour while it’s opposite, Al-Mudhill is the One who humiliates. As we have seen with other names, they sometimes come in pairs such as Ar-Rafi, the One who elevates and Al-Khafid, the One who debases, and puts things down after they have been raised. And Al Sami’ the One who hears and Al-Baseer, the one who Sees. Though Imam Ghazali didn’t elaborate that much on these two names, I will elaborate......
