The disappearance of barakah – Signs of the Day of Judgement

The disappearance of barakah - Signs of the Day of Judgement

One of the signs of the Day of Judgement is that time will pass quickly, knowledge will be lifted and there will be a great deal of fitan (trials and tribulations). In the narration, reported by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), he narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said,

(Religious) knowledge will be taken away (by the death of religious scholars), ignorance (in religion) and fitan (tribulations) will appear; and harj will increase.” It was asked, “What is harj, O Allah’s Messenger ()?” He replied by beckoning with his hand indicating “killing.” (Bukhari)

In another hadith, Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

The Last Hour will not come unless there is much harj.” They said, “What is harj?” Thereupon he said, “Bloodshed, bloodshed.” (Muslim)

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

“Time will be fast, knowledge would be snatched away, fitan (turmoil) would be rampant, miserliness would be put (in the hearts of the people) and therewould be harj. They said, “What is harj?” Thereupon he said, “It is bloodshed”. (Muslim)

In these hadith, we observe the signs of the Day of Judgment. Scholars have categorised them into three groups: minor signs, intermediate signs, and major signs. There are about forty to fifty minor signs, but we have yet to witness the ten major signs. These signs indicate that the Day of Judgment is drawing near.

Time is fleeting

Time seems to move swiftly. Yesterday, it felt like we had just begun the year, and now it is ending. Yesterday, we started the month, and today it has already passed. Scholars have reflected on this, with many, including Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and Imam Nawawi, explaining that it means the barakah (blessing) in time will be diminished. It often feels like 24 hours are not as productive as before. However, not all barakah has been lifted—it all depends on the actions and intentions of the individual.

What is barakah

Barakah is a vital aspect of our lives. It represents an extension—an extension of time, rizq (provision), and health. It is like an elasticity, that extends the normal capacity of something, making it lasting and beneficial.

Barakah is a blessing that transcends logic and ordinary human understanding. It is defined favour through which Allah bestows growth in something which is otherwise finite, making it expand in a way that prolongs it even though the amount – whether it is a period of time, or the notes in your pocket or the food on the table did not materially change, but its output becomes abundant. With limited resources, the output is extraordinarily maximised.

Moreover that thing is extended and prolonged. Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 751 AH) observed that one of the features is continuity, saying, “Barakah in its reality: “Stability and permanence.”

Al-Raghib Al-Isfahani (d. 502 AH) said in Mufradat Al-Quran that barakah is the presence of divine goodness in something, which makes it blessed and increased.

The thing that experiences source of these blessings becomes “mubarak” as it imbued with continual and abundant goodness and benefits.

The abundance cannot be quantified, but with limited resources, one is able to achieve incredible growth, as we see with charity. On paper, giving diminishes our wealth, but when viewed through a different lens, we discover that giving charity actually multiplies wealth. This could be demonstrated by the fact one person’s limited or modest wealth is sufficient for them and though not perceptibly great, it brings them contentment, whilst another’s riches leaves him continually dissatisfied.

Similarly when it comes to time, the same hour for one person could be frittered away, with nothing to show for it, while for another, it could be tremendously productive – in which he achieves what would take someone else hours, days or weeks or even a lifetime.

Another aspect of barakah is that it shields a person from calamities, allowing them to feel inner peace despite external challenges and tests.

Things that are mubarak

Anything that has been touched with divine favour, and showered with blessings is termed “mubarak”.

And this is a blessed reminder that We have sent down. (Al Anbiya, 50)

A book which We have sent down to you is blessed. (Al An’am, 155)

And He made me blessed wherever I may be. (Maryam, 31)

Indeed, We sent it down on a blessed night. (Ad Dukhan, 3)

My Lord, let me land in a blessed landing place. (Al Mu’minun, 29)

And We sent down from the sky blessed water. (Qamar, 9)

Indeed the last example, of rain, is a good one, as rain, though it is a collection of mere droplets of water, produces the most immeasurable greenery, nurturing the forests and enabling the growth of fruits, vegetation, and life itself in its abundance. Hence, Allah draws our attention to it repeatedly, saying:

Have you not seen that Allah sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby fruits of varying colors? (Az Zumar, 21)

This rain represents divine goodness that nourishes the earth, just as blessings nourish all things.

Who is tabarak?

The Quran emphasises Allah’s special relationship with blessings through the frequent use of the term tabarak. For it is the One who is blessed, who is the source of all blessings:

Blessed is He who made constellations in the sky. (Al Furqan, 61)

Blessed is Allah, the best of creators. (Al Mu’minun, 14)

Blessed is the One who sent down the criterion (the Quran). (Al Furqan, 1)

Blessed is He who, if He wills, can give you something better than that. (Al Furqan, 10)

Blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds. (Ghafir, 64)

Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion. (Al Mulk, 1)

Time is one of the creations of Allah that He has blessed, and indeed there are certain hours, days, months which are even more blessed, such as the last third of the night, Laylatul Qadr, Fajr time, Jumu’ah, Ramadan, and the Day of Arafat. We see that Laytatul Qadr is blessed because it was the night on which Allah sent His Quran – and anything which is touched by Allah’s words and Quran attains a special quality.

The loss of barakah

We see that the barakah, the quality of being blessed, increased in goodness and extended, like an umbrella, encompassing and enhancing every facet of our existence is linked to the divine. And losing this barakah is one of the signs of the Day of Judgment.

This is what we are seeing. Ironically, despite the remarkable advancements that have provided us with time-saving machines and devices and mechanised processes to simplify tasks, we have witnessed a decline in the barakah (blessings) in our time. The widespread use of social media and the allure of binge-watching series on platforms like Netflix have made it increasingly easy to waste hours without meaningful purpose. Similarly when it comes to wealth, we have seen the devaluing of wealth. Greed is one of the things that strips barakah from wealth, as well as cheating others.

Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

I asked the Prophet (for some money) and he gave me, and then again I asked him and he gave me, and then again I asked him and he gave me and he then said, “This wealth is (like) green and sweet (fruit), and whoever takes it without greed, Allah will bless it for him, but whoever takes it with greed, Allah will not bless it for him, and he will be like the one who eats but is never satisfied. And the upper (giving) hand is better than the lower (taking) hand.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

By contrast, being honest in dealings, increases the barakah in wealth.

Hakim ibn Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

Both parties in a business transaction have the right to annul it, as long as they have not separated. If they are truthful and clear with one another, their transaction is blessed. If they lie and conceal something, the blessing of their transaction will be eliminated. (Bukhari and Muslim)

At this time, fitan (tribulations) will dominate and prevail. One trial follows another, barely giving us time to catch our breath before the next begins. One of the greatest fitan of our time is the ongoing situation in Palestine—a test for the entire Ummah. Similarly, we see tribulations in Lebanon, Sudan, and Syria. Fitan will persist, spreading everywhere. These ongoing trials are a clear indication that the Day of Judgment is drawing near.

What does this mean for us? It means we must be prepared. Life is unpredictable, and we can leave this world at any time. Preparation is key, as we strive to live in a way that aligns with our ultimate purpose.

Ignorance

Another sign of the Day of Judgment is the prevalence of ignorance. Despite the abundance of information and advancements like AI, true knowledge is what brings us closer to Allah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that ignorance will prevail with the death of scholars and there would be an increase in harj. When asked to explain harj, he replied it would be ‘bloodshed, bloodshed.’ Today, we are witnessing this bloodshed being livestreamed daily—a clear sign of the Day of Judgment.

Solutions

The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not merely mention the signs, he also provided solutions. Worshipping Allah during times of calamities and tribulations is what will protect us and as it will be so difficult to worship Allah during such times,

Remain steadfast

During times of trial the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed us to hold firmly to our religion during such trials, it is easy to let go of your faith and to become distracted. The word fitnah refers to a state of disturbance and confusion, where one’s vision becomes so clouded that it is difficult to discern the right path. This is the era of fitan.

That is why to navigate these challenging times, we must hold fast in the Book of Allah and why the Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged us by telling us of the special reward, that worshipping Allah during these tumultuous periods is akin to migrating to Him—a high honour and tremendous reward.

Ma’qil ibn Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

Worship during the time of turmoil is like migrating to me. (Muslim)

In another narration, it is stated as:

Deeds during the time of turmoil are like migrating to me. (Imam Ahmad)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) understood that people would become fickle and easily distracted, so he urged us to stay focused not only on prayer and fasting but also on caring for the oppressed.

The huge reward of worshipping Allah during times of tribulation

Abu Tha’labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from Messenger of Allah (ﷺ):

Ahead of you are days which will require endurance, in which showing endurance will be like grasping live coals. The one who acts rightly during that period will have the reward of fifty men who act as he does.

Another version has:

He said (The hearers asked:) Messenger of Allah, the reward of fifty of them?

He replied: The reward of fifty of you. (Abu Dawoud)

In Surat Hajj, Allah states that the reward for migrating, which is what we can earn by worshiping Him during times of fitan, is generous:

And those who emigrated in Allah’s way then were killed or died—Allah will most surely provide them with good provision. And indeed, it is Allah who is certainly the Best of providers. (Al-Ḥajj, Ayah 58)

Memorise this dua

When faced with uncertainty and confusion, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would turn to specific supplications. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated what he used to recite, guiding us on what to do when we cannot decide our course of action.

A’isha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) got up at night he began his prayer by saying,

Allahumma rabba Jibreela wa Meekaeela wa Israafeela, faatiara as-samawaati wal-ard, ’Aalima al-ghaybi wa ash-shahaadah, Anta tahkumu bayna ‘ibaadika fima kanu fihi yakhtalifoon. Ihdini lima ukhtulifa fihi mina al-haqqi bi-ithnik, Innaka tahdi man tashaa’u ila siratin mustaqeem.

O Allah, Lord of Jibraīl, Mīkaīl and Israfīl (great angels), Creator of the heavens and the Earth,  Knower of the seen and the unseen.  You are the arbitrator between Your servants in that which they have disputed. Guide me to the truth by Your leave, in that which they have differed, for verily You guide whom You will to a straight path. (Muslim)

Let us memorise this dua and keeping asking Allah to increase the barakah in our time, in our health, in our lives and to protect us from calamities and to keep us on the straight path.

Beseeching Allah for His protection

Supplication (Munaajat)

My Lord, injustice, killing, and displacement have overwhelmed us. The darkness has intensified, and the tyrants and sins have multiplied. Division and disagreements have increased.

My Lord, all hope is cut off except through You, and all paths are closed except to You. You are the Self-Sufficient, and we are the needy before You. We have no Lord but You to call upon, nor any deity to place our hope on but you. Lift from the Ummah the confusion, oppression, cruelty, humiliation, injustice, and degradation we are suffering. Unite our hearts in devotion to You, strengthen our ranks, and purify them from the hypocrites, the treacherous, the discouragers, and the betrayers.

My Lord, we have no excuse to offer, nor any justification to defend ourselves, but we have come to You as humble and submissive servants, pleading for Your satisfaction, awaiting Your relief, forgiveness, and pardon. We ask You, O Most Forgiving, O Most Merciful, by Your noble words: “My mercy precedes My anger,” to encompass us with Your mercy. You are the One who began Your glorious Book with “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,” and You said: “Then He turned to them that they might repent.” So begin with us today with forgiveness and repentance, O Allah, O Accepter of repentance, O Forgiver of sins.

My Lord, You said, and Your word is the truth: “I am as My servant thinks of Me.” We bear witness to You that we think of You only with goodness, that You will have mercy on us and forgive us, O Most Forgiving, O Most Merciful. We ask You to grant us repentance, O Oft-Relenting, expand our provisions, O Provider. Guide us and our children and our families, O Guide, and strengthen us in the truth. Write us among the people of Paradise, relieve the distress of the Ummah, remove the gloom from us, and grant victory to the oppressed and the wronged. Take revenge on the unjust, the aggressors, and the arrogant.

My Lord, we beseech You with Your words: “And I am indeed the Forgiver of those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds, and then remain steadfast.” O Lord, we come to You as repentant; do not send us away disappointed. Grant us this hour repentance and forgiveness, pardon and well-being, mercy and acceptance, O Lord of the worlds.

Make us among those whom You love and who love You, the repentant and the returning, who have no fear and will not grieve. Make us keys to goodness and locks to evil, steadfast in the truth, calling to it, giving glad tidings, facilitating it, wise and merciful.

O Allah, You are our Lord, there is no deity but You. You created us and we are Your servants. We are bound by Your covenant and honour our promise to you as much as we are able. We seek refuge in You from the evil of what we have done. We acknowledge Your blessings upon us and confess our sins. So forgive us, for none forgives sins except You.

May Allah’s peace, blessings, and mercy be upon the best of His creation, our Master Muhammad, and upon his family and all his companions.

Ameen, and all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
