Mercy is only yours if you accept it

In Surat al-Ankabout, Allah Almighty said: Those who disbelieved in God’s signs and His encounter—these have despaired of My mercy. For them is a painful torment. (29:23) It is a common theme that disbelievers especially in the Makkah period deny the hereafter. They think death is the end of the story and that there will be no chapters after that. Allah Almighty says that those who deny His revelation, signs and meeting Him are despaired of his rahma (mercy).......

The story of Qarun - using what you have to please Allah and living with balance.

There were two types of inhabitant in Egypt at the time of Musa (peace be on him) – the Coptics and Bani Israel, the descendants of Prophet Yaqoob (Israel) peace be on him. Though Qarun was from Musa’s people, Bani Israel, he rebelled against him. Allah had made Qarun the wealthiest man on earth to the extent that the keys to his treasure were so heavy they could not be carried by the strongest men. Imagine the size of his treasure.

When you have Allah’s protection, you have nothing to fear

Surat Al-Qasas means stories and indeed this surah is full of stories. The story of Prophet Musa (peace be on him) is mentioned the most in the Quran. When you put ‘Musa’ in a Quranic search engine, it comes up around 130 times, far more than any other Prophet. The story highlights the challenges he faced, the various tests and calamities he endured and his remarkable patience throughout all of this. Harboured by the enemy Musa (peace be on him ) was living in Egypt and the irony is that he was......

The perfection of creation is a sign of the Creator

In Surat Naml, Allah Almighty says: And you see the mountains, thinking they are standing still, when in fact they are moving just like the movement of the clouds. Such is the making of God who perfected everything. He is All-Aware of what you do. (27:88) The creation of Allah is perfect but when we interfere, we ruin it. He created and perfected it for us, but we have polluted, corrupted and......

Favours and tests - lessons from Prophet Suleman (peace be on him)

In Surah Naml there are plenty of lessons, particularly in the verses when Allah Almighty describes the kingdom of the ants. One ant tells the other to watch out because Suleman (peace be on him) is coming with his troops and they might get trodden on accidentally. Until, when they came upon the Valley of Ants, an ant said, “O ants! Go into your nests, lest Solomon and his troops crush you......

The enlightened heart

In Surat Shu’ara Allah Almighty says that the one who carried the revelation is Jibril, and he revealed it onto the heart of the Prophet (peace be on him). This is certainly a revelation from the Lord of all worlds, which the trustworthy spirit ˹Gabriel˺ brought down into your heart ˹O Prophet˺—so that you may be one of the warners— in a clear Arabic tongue. (26:190-195) In these ayahs we see Allah Almighty is saying that......

The attributes of a true God

The story of Ibrahim (peace be on him) which appears in 17 chapters (juz) of the Quran is the most frequently mentioned story after the story of Musa (peace be on him). In Surat Shuara, we see the discussion between Ibrahim (peace be on him) and his father and community. Ibrahim (peace be on him) asks his community why they worship idols. In their reply, they say they are following the tradition of their previous generations. While Ibrahim’s question is logical, their answer is not based on rationality. They cannot explain the......

the beautiful attributes of the Servants of the All Merciful

In the very well known verses about the characteristics of the Ibad ur Rahman ‘Servants of Ar-Rahman’ in Surat al Furqan, the Most Merciful, Allah Almighty describes the qualities that will make us the VIPs of Jannah if we adopt them. Allah Almighty enumerates the attributes of these people and mentions the special treatment they will receive in Jannah due to what they did during their lifetime on Earth and for their patience (sabr) and they will be greeted by Allah Almighty.

Man of the people vs the corrupt elite

In Surat al-Furqan the disbelievers wonder why the Messenger (peace be upon him) walks in the street and in the marketplaces like an ordinary person. Their assumption is that anyone who is important should not be accessible to the public. He should be aloof, dwell in an ivory tower surrounded by bodyguards, travel in fancy vehicles, have luxurious grand palaces, and be followed by an entourage of sycophants. And they say, “What sort of messenger......

What do you use as a point of reference when you have a dispute?

Allah Almighty addresses the issue of how to resolve a dispute and tells us that the point of reference in a dispute should be the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be on him), and the shariah. Yet if a group of people cannot agree on something, and are told this, they may refuse to use this and choose something else as the arbiter. And when they are called to God and His Messenger, in order to......

Trial by rumour vs innocent until proven guilty

In Surat Nur there are many rulings, as it was revealed in Madinah, and in general surahs revealed in Madinah contained guidance on what was permissible and impermissible in Islam. a surah which We have revealed and made ˹its rulings˺ obligatory, and revealed in it clear commandments so that you may be mindful. (24:1) The main theme of this surah is the importance of protecting one other’s reputation. It mentions the episode of Al Ifk, when some hypocrites slandered Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). Allah Almighty clears her reputation......

Ramadan - a month of internal and external victories

Ramadan: victory against your nafs and your enemy Praise be to God, we have received an honourable guest, Ramadan, which will stay with us for around a month. Guests usually brings gifts, and Ramadan generously brings with it forgiveness and mercy in abundance. In Ramadan, God has made it compulsory for us to fast, as He stated in the Quran: O believers! Fasting is prescribed for you—as it was for those before you—so perhaps you will gain taqwa. (2:183) The verse ends with you will achieve ‘taqwa’, in the second person “you”.......

The arrogant worshipper vs the humble sinner

Arrogance and rebellion In Surat al-Muminoun, Allah Almighty tells us He punished the disbelievers, but despite this they did not turn back to Him, nor did they supplicate to Him. And We have already seized them with torment, but they never humbled themselves to their Lord, nor did they ˹submissively˺ appeal ˹to Him˺. (23:76) The image the Quran paints here is of the disbelievers who received their punishment, but continued rebelling against Him and His commands. This is sheer arrogance. This is why Allah......

The Day no one can escape

Among the verses of Surat al-Muminoun, Allah Almighty talks about the creation of mankind and the states from the womb, to childhood, adulthood and eventually death. Then Allah Almighty says that we will be resurrected: And indeed, We created humankind from an extract of clay, then placed each ˹human˺ as a sperm-drop in a secure place, then We developed the drop into a clinging clot ˹of blood˺, then developed the clot into a lump ˹of flesh˺, then developed the lump into bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, then We brought it into being......
