Jumuah – the special offer you shouldn’t refuse

Jumuah

Adam was created and mankind’s earthly existence will end

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported God’s Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying:

“The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he was brought into paradise, on it he was expelled from it, and the last hour will take place on no day other than Friday.” [Muslim]

Aus bin Aus reported God’s Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying:

“Among the most excellent of your days is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he died, on it the last trumpet will be blown, and on it the shout will be made, so invoke many blessings on me that day, for your blessing will be presented to me.” He was asked how that could be when his body had decayed and replied, “God has prohibited the earth from consuming the bodies of prophets.” (Abu Dawud, Nasa’i, Ibn Majah, Darimi and Baihaqi, in [Kitab] ad-Da‘awat al-Kabir)

From this narration we see that the day of Jumuah was the day that Adam was created and the day the Trumpet will be blown and Adam (mankind) will die and his existence on earth will come to an end.

Sharing his knowledge with his (peace be upon him) Ummah

In the same narration the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that people should increase sending blessings on him on Jumuah. He is, out of his mercy, enlightening us, by sharing with us knowledge of the hidden blessings in this day, of which would not otherwise be aware nor take advantage. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was giving us insight into this time so that we could maximise our benefit and increase our good deeds on that day aware that it is a special day.

In another hadith, we see that there are 5 reasons that make Jumuah special. Abu Lubabah bin ‘Abdul-Mundhir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

‘Friday is the chief of days, the greatest day before Allah. It is greater before Allah then the Day of Adha and the Day of Fitr. It has five characteristics:

1 On it Allah created Adam

2 On it Allah sent down Adam to this earth

4 On it Adam passed away

5 On it there is a time during which a person does not ask Allah for anything but He will give it to him, so long as he does not ask for anything that is forbidden

4 On it the Hour will begin. There is no angel who is close to Allah, no heaven, no earth, no wind, no mountain, and no sea that does not fear Friday.’” [Ibn Majah]

Scholars wondered why it is a virtue that Adam was expelled from Jannah on Jumuah. They decided that this was a virtue because had Adam not been expelled from Jannah, the progeny of Adam would not have been born. The human race – including the prophets and messengers and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) – would not have come into existence.

The Final Hour is a virtue because that is when Allah will reward the righteous and punish the wicked. This is why the day of Jumuah is special.

Jumuah is even better than Eid

In another narration we are told that the day of Jummuah is better than Eid and the prayer of Eid, as the prayer of Jumuah is fard whereas Eid prayer is only sunnah (as per the Shafi madhab) or wajib in the Hanafi school).

Jumuah is an exclusive blessing for Muslims as previous nations rejected it

It is beautiful that Allah Almighty guided us to this day, while the previous nations, the Jews and Christians were not given it. The collection of narrations on this topic show that the day was presented to the previous nations but they did not take it. For instance when it was told to Musa (peace be upon him) his people contested why Jumuah was special rather than Saturday and they did not accept it. Therefore Saturday was approved for them and missed out on the blessings of Friday, meanwhile, Christians preferred Sunday, so Muslims came last but our sacred day comes before the sabbath of the Jews and Christians, as Saturday and Sunday come after.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported God’s Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying:

“We who are last shall be first on the day of resurrection, although [others] were given the Book before us and we were given it after them. It follows that this was their day which was prescribed for them (meaning Friday), but they disagreed about it and God guided us to it. The people come after us with regard to it, the Jews observing the next day and the Christians the day following that.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

“We who are last shall be first on the day of resurrection, and we shall be the first to enter paradise although [others] . . .”, and he mentioned something similar up to the end. In another version by him from Abu Hurayrah and Hudhaifa they reported God’s Messenger as saying at the end of the tradition, “We are the last of the people in this world and shall be the first on the day of resurrection, this being decreed for us before all creatures.” [Muslim]

Abu Hurayrah and Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

It was Friday from which Allah diverted those who were before us. For the Jews (the day set aside for prayer) was Sabt (Saturday), and for the Christians it was Sunday. And Allah turned towards us and guided us to Friday (as the day of prayer) for us. In fact, He (Allah) made Friday, Saturday and Sunday (as days of prayer). In this order would they (Jews and Christians) come after us on the Day of Resurrection. We are the last of (the Ummahs) among the people in this world and the first among the created to be judged on the Day of Resurrection. In one narration it is: ‘, to be judged among them”. [Muslim]

Invest in Friday currency

Therefore we need to make the most of Jumuah. Invest in Fridays, the return is better than Cryptocurrency! Increase your investment ad seize the opportunity. Not only is there special reward but the special hour, in which when you ask for anything from Allah and He responds to you, (of course these should not be haram things). Scholars have tried to figure out when this hour is and they think it is in the last hour before Maghrib. It is known as Sa’atul Ijaba.

The time for accepted duas is an hour before Maghrib on Jumuah

Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

Friday is divided into twelve hours. Amongst them there is an hour in which a Muslim does not ask Allah for anything but He gives it to him. So seek it in the last hour after the Asr prayer. [Abu Dawoud]

Jumuah is a cleansing agent

The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us that the day of Jumuah is like a cleansing agent, which cleanses your soul, your body, your actions and your deeds, deleting your minor sins for the week. It boosts your reward, topping up your account in the Hereafter.

Abu Hurayrah reported God’s Messenger as saying,

“The five [daily] prayers, Friday to Friday and Ramadan to Ramadan make expiation for what has happened since the previous one when major sins have been avoided.” [Muslim]

Don’t let business distract you from Jumuah – that is a lose lose situation

Jumuah is therefore full of virtues and blessings. Let’s treat Jumuah as a special day, rather than prioritising our business on Fridays. That is why we have been taught to rush to catch the prayer.

O you who believe! When the call is made for prayer on Congregation Day, hasten to the remembrance of God, and drop all business. That is better for you, if you only knew. [62:9]

It is haram for men to work during the time of Jumuah and whatever you earn during that time will be haram. Jumuah is not like any other day of the week. The mercy of Allah envelops us that day. Accept the special offer from Allah to increase your investments and your closeness to Him and you and your family.

May Allah enable us to maximise our real and everlasting profit and bless our profit in this life. Ameen
