Is it permissible to use your photo as a profile picture on social media?

In today’s world, social media is unavoidable and there is an abundance of images that are posted and circulated.

Permissibility and decency

Firstly, from an Islamic perspective, there is generally no issue with using a personal photo on social media, provided it meets the requirements of decency and modesty. Both men and women are encouraged to dress and behave modestly in Islam, and this principle extends to the way we present ourselves online. Wearing appropriate clothing and maintaining a dignified appearance respects the values of modesty and humility, which are core to our faith.

Consideration of modesty and caution

While it is permissible, it may be preferable to avoid using personal photos in public online spaces. One reason for this is the potential risk of vanity or ‘showing off’ (riya), which can subtly lead to seeking validation or admiration. Also to avoid envy. Social media can easily cultivate this mindset, especially with the prevalence of “likes” and “followers.” From an Islamic perspective, it’s preferable to guard our intentions and use social media responsibly without falling into vanity.

Misuse

Additionally, the digital world brings risks of misuse. Photos can be altered, misused, or shared in ways we might not intend or approve. Choosing not to use your own image can protect your privacy and reduce the risk of your photograph being exploited.

Alternative Approaches

Many Muslims find alternatives that allow them to maintain an online presence without using their own photos. Some use scenic images, quotes, artwork, or symbols that represent them or their interests. This approach enables us to engage on social media while still exercising caution and modesty, aligning with the Islamic emphasis on safeguarding our dignity and privacy. Using your own photo as a profile picture is permissible if it’s done with decency and in line with Islamic values. Ultimately, whether you choose to use your photo or not, the most important aspect is sincerity in our actions and intentions, aiming to represent our faith respectfully in all spaces.
