Known as Sultan al-'Ulama, Imam Izz al-Din Abd as-Salam was a courageous scholar who stood up to the tyrants of his time. He advised Muslim rulers at a time when the Islamic world was under attack from Tartars and Crusaders. He was described by Ibn al-Imad al-Hanbali as the Sheikh of Islam. An expert in Islamic law, he wrote many brilliant and important books. His literary legacy is very valuable, particularly in the fields of Shafi'i jurisprudence, Quranic jurisprudence, tafsir, and Sufism. His main and enduring contribution was his masterpiece on Islamic legal principles Qawa'id al-Ahkam fi Masalih al-Anam. Al-Qawa'id al-Sughra, or al-Fawa'id fi Mukhtasar al-Qawa'id is its summary.
